Information about the silk unit of measurement

If you buy the appropriate and 100 percent pure silk, you will most likely be familiar with the Momme unit. The world considers this unit to be the standard measurement for genuine silk.

• The smaller the Momme unit, the thinner, see-through, and lighter the silk fabric is.
• The greater the Momme unit, the heavier the thicker the silk fabric becomes.
• Note Momme is not a unit of measurement like mm (millimeters), but it does have a value of 1 momme = 4,340 g/m2.

The stronger, heavier, and more opaque the silk fabric grows as the momme increases. Even within the same silk, this might vary. Silk satin, for example, will have 16mm or 19mm silk satin.
